Newsletter #7, January 2024
Research @Nyenrode
Dear colleagues!
In this seventh edition we look back at the calendar year 2023 and we look forward to 2024. As usual, we kick things off with academic output, with a focus not only on journal publications, but also on books and book chapters. We then turn to the Impact Cases and several interesting publications that came out of these. Read on for other topics such as awards, an interview with yours truly in Van Verre, updates on the Research Collaboration Areas, IRB & Data Management and finally some small requests.
Bo van der Rhee Research Director
Publications
In 2023 we collectively published 31 ABS articles, 11 Eigenfactor articles, and 24 Law articles, for a total of 66 articles of which 23 appeared in top-tier journals.
For 2030, the research output goals will be: at least 50 journal articles in ABS journals of which 30 in ABS: 3+, and 30 in Law journals. Some way to go, but we have achieved a solid research output over the last couple of years.
The year 2022 was higher than 2023, but 2023 was better than any of the 3 years before 2022, so great job to everyone!
The table below shows an overview of the publications by calendar year, and you can find ALL academic output of 2023 at the bottom of this Newsletter. If any of your publications are missing, then please inform Chantal de Wit as soon as possible.
Please also note that we will abandon the Eigenfactor list by January 1st, 2026. As such, if you are currently in the review process with a journal that does not appear in the ABS list, but does appear in the Eigenfactor list, you still have plenty of time to get it accepted. However, new projects should be directed at one of the 1,800 journals that appear in the ABS list!

In this January Newsletter I also look back at the books and book chapters. In total we wrote 7 books, edited 2 more, and wrote 12 book chapters. Consider the Nyenrode Research Output Rating System (select link or search for “Research Output Rating System” on the intranet) for the points allocated to these and please note that we added Palgrave Macmillan to the list of Highly Respected Publishers for the International Market.
And the winner is…
While all publications are great and help establish Nyenrode as a solid academic institute, I also want to recognize three outstanding scholars this time around. Honorable mentions go to Rob Blomme and Ivo De Loo. Rob saw two Eigenfactor: 3 Point articles as well as three ABS: 1 Point articles published in 2023 as well as one book chapter for 2 points, reaching 11 points in a single calendar year. Ivo saw four ABS: 3 Point articles published in 2023 (the most ABS points of any colleague) as well as one book chapter for 2 points, realizing 14 points in a single calendar year.
The colleague with the most points in 2023 has more than these two combined though. She saw one ABS: 5 Point (!!) article published as well as six (!!) Eigenfactor: 3 Point articles and one ABS: 1 Point article. In addition, she was a book editor and wrote two book chapters, for 2 points each. The total number of research points in 2023 was thus 30. Please join me in congratulating Pascale Peters when you see her!

Impact Cases
We closed the 2023 calendar year with 44 Impact Cases, which are beautifully captured in the second edition of the Impact Cases Booklet. Get yours now or at the faculty meeting and have a look at your Impact Case or any of your colleagues’. Many are accompanied by short videos, which will be rolled out throughout the new year. Of course, if you are interested in adding your Impact Case to the growing catalogue, then contact me at b.vdrhee@nyenrode.nl.
Before the summer of 2023, there was an open call by a new Elsevier journal, called “Societal Impacts”. While this journal does not yet appear in the ABS list, it is an interesting journal focused on the Impact that researchers have achieved, and as such fits perfectly with our Impact Cases. I have the privilege to share with you that three of our Impact Cases have been accepted for publication by this new journal:

Research Awards
I already mentioned her, but in addition to an insane number of research points, Pascale Peters’ article in the Journal of Applied Psychology (JAP is ABS: 4*, so 5 points) received the Editor’s Choice selection. From the Editor: “I select one article based on societal relevance, practical impact, and/or the potential for moving our science in new directions,” and for the October 2023 issue, this was Pascale’s!
Tom Berkhout’s opinion piece in the Dutch Tijdschrift voor Fiscaal Recht on the ongoing capital gains tax debate was the most read article in 2023 in that journal. For more on this extraordinary achievement, see also here.
Stefanie Beninger’s bestselling 2015 teaching case titled “Does Mattel’s Iconic Barbie Doll need a Makeover?” was named an “Ivey Classic” by Ivey Publishing, meaning that it is consistently ranked as a global top seller. For more on this amazing achievement, see here.
Interview Bo
I won’t toot my own horn too much, but if you want to know more about what drives me to be the best Research Director as I can possibly be, then you can read my interview in Nyenrode’s Van Verre Magazine here, pages 32-33.
Research Collaboration Areas Update
During 2023 we collectively worked on the Research Collaboration Areas. In total 48 faculty members joined the seminars in June and October (thank you so much!) and we ended up with three Collaboration Areas, including faculty representatives from all five Centers under the umbrella “Research for a Sustainable Future”.

The representatives have been working on convincing texts for the domains, research questions, and relevant organizational challenges in each Area. Once this is done, an update will be sent out to the entire faculty.
Next steps in 2024 are to build a website to showcase these Areas, including participating faculty, already published research, and completed/ongoing collaborations with companies, NGOs, and governments. We will also establish preferred journal outlets for each Area, which can include journals that do not appear in the ABS list, which can replace some of the journals we publish in that only appear in the Eigenfactor list that has not been updated since 2015.
IRB & Data Management Update
We are almost done with the digitalization of the IRB approval process. For now, you can still fill in the Word file before you start your empirical data collection, but in the very near future, this will be automated in an online form.
We are also making great strides on Data Management, and we have decided to collaborate with SURF’s Research Drive. This allows you to create folders per research project, where you securely store your data and analyses, which you can share with your co-authors for easy collaboration. Once a research project is completed, you can securely archive this data in a low-energy manner to satisfy any requests by editors in the future.
Several colleagues have already experimented with this, if you are interested in gaining access to Research Drive, then please send an email to Frank de Visser, our Data Steward (f.devisser@nyenrode.nl) and myself (b.vdrhee@nyenrode.nl).
Two requests
- In Google Scholar, please make sure to add Nyenrode / Nyenrode Business University / Nyenrode Business Universiteit as your Partnership (under the Profile) AND use your @nyenrode.nl email address for verification. Only this way will you show up in the Nyenrode Business University overview of colleagues, which is important for accreditations etc.! To check whether you appear there, just go to scholar.google.com, look for “Nyenrode”, and see if you appear in that list!
- Check your bio-page to see if it is up to date regarding the “buttons” you can have. Here is a complete list to choose from, if you want to add/remove some, please contact Carlijn Kappelle (c.kappelle@nyenrode.nl). - Email, Telephone; - Google Scholar, ResearchGate; - SSRN, Narcis, ORCID; - LinkedIn, X, WhatsApp.
“Thank you all very much for your continued contributions to our research culture and output. I am looking forward to seeing you all at the Nyenrode estates.”
